So on Christmas morning I woke up feeling like I couldn’t breathe and desperately needing fresh air. My head was hazy and skin a bit achy.

We went to church and half way through the service I began shivering and feeling ill. By the time we got home and had our Christmas lunch, I was feeling totally rubbish.

Later that day I had to go to bed and I have been there for the 4 days since, with terrible flu. All the symptoms, with trimmings.

Numerous times, my boyfriend’s parents asked me if I wanted to take a paracetam

ol and I refused. I have not taken any medical drugs since 2008 when I had a tooth abscess that was unbearably painful and I believe there’s wisdom in not taking painkillers (and certainly all other drugs) as far as you possibly can.

Here’s why…

The first part of my flu symptoms included a severe lower back and glute muscle pain. I was not sure whether this was from the illness or from a sports injury or spinal misalignment. On day 3 of the flu, this pain subsided completely, setting my mind at ease that it was not some kind of injury. Had I have masked the pain with the analgesic, I would be unsure as to whether the pain had really gone or not and whether it was related to the illness.

Taking painkillers, or any other type of drug – be it a statin, anti-biotic, ant-acid, hormone regulator, diabetes drug, asthma drug – only serves to mask the problem, not solve it.

It’s like the pilot putting a sheet over the control panel of his aeroplane when he realises something’s gone wrong and the plane’s descending out of the air.

In dire situations, this is when we need to pay EXTRA attention to what is going on, not less.

Over the past 4 days of this illness and although I have been really very unwell, it has been interesting to stay totally in tune with my body and see and feel the illness moving around my body and flushing itself out. Last night night I was in the full-on sweating it out phase and I woke up this morning feeling a fair bit better, even though still very shaky and lacking energy.

Paracetamol is also very acidifying to your body and puts an extra strain on your liver and kidneys, just when they

need their energy most for your recovery. The key is to ALKALISE your body with green juices and nutritious foods.

What food did my body naturally want me to eat during this time? Small amounts of fresh, ripe, raw, organic fruits and veg; the alkaline food of life and the food of recovery.
