Ok, so I came across this charity site today and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that it had GREAT branding and social media marketing :-)

The site is TheGirlEffect.org – I read about it on Marie Forleo’s blog and checked it out because she spoke passionately about what a good cause it was.

It’s a charity that helps girls in 3rd World countries: Did you know that there are over 600 million adolescent girls getting married by age 12 to much older men, who not only give them HIV, but an average of 4 kids by age 20 with zero health care, no education or hope for any kind of normal life?

You can check out the site yourself but I want to highlight why I think it’s so great from an online branding and marketing point of view and how they’ve really worked their social media marketing. Here’s the rundown…

7 Reasons Why The Girl Effect has killer online branding and social media marketing

  1. The layout – simple, direct, clear, minimal. The homepage is bold and orange and contains one main thing…
  2. The hook – the site boldly asks you a question and there are two big choice buttons for you to click on. this immediately draws you in. Upon clicking either of the choices, you are directed to the…
  3. Video – it’s brief, clear, visually stunning, quirky and frankly captivating from beginning to end, as well as being emotive and persuasive.
  4. Call to action – it asks the reader to either donate to the charity and/or share the site link to their contacts via e-mail or…
  5. Social network – and this charity has REALLY gone all out with getting this video to go viral on the social networks. They have a Facebook fan page with almost 200,000 fans, a Twitter account and a YouTube channel, with views in excess of 1.6 million.
  6. A Presentation Kit – kind of like a set of affiliate tools but for charities – includes presentation slides, banners, logos, event details and a whole load of video embed codes.
  7. Merchandise and free stuff – there are links to buy t-shirts and also free desktop wallpaper downloads and buttons. So this is kind of like your product line and opt-in gift.

The real thing about this site that shines like a beacon is the simplicity, strong message and the clear call to action. This is something we can all learn form. Think of traditional charity marketing – dull, dreary, uncool, old fashioned. Not this site – it is fresh-looking, appealing, simple and VERY effective.
