Nowadays, I’m a non-drinker and feel much better for it – my skin is better, no more foggy heads (even though I used to only drink one or two pints of beer or cider) and I’m leaner too.

Occasionally, however, I do miss a nice sunny summer’s evening pint of crisp apple or fruit cider. 

When I went vegan a few years ago, I discovered kombucha tea – a fermented drink that is said to have beneficial effects on digestion and colon health. I used to buy it in 750ml bottles and to me it tastes and looks a lot like sparkling wine – great for parties when I decided to give up alcohol.

This is a really great, cheaper and tastier version of cider that I threw together and the beauty is, it’s totally healthy and very low calorie!

Kombucha cordial is around £3.50/$6 and will make around 10 pints of your cider.  Alternatively you can get fruit juice (fresh, not cordial and not from concentrate) for as little as £1/$1.60 a litre and sparkling mineral water for as little as £0.50/$ per 2 litre bottle. Apple cider vinegar is around £2 per 500ml So you could make this for as little as around £0.70/$1.20 per pint – about a quarter of the price of a pint of cider – no hangover, no nasty sulphites and kind on your wallet. :-)

Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV is said to be a natural remedy for many ailments. In 400 B.C.E Hippocrates (the father of modern medicine) knew about apple cider vinegar’s antibiotic properties and recommended it to his patients for its healing properties. Since then it’s been valued by many cultures right up to modern times.

Apple cider vinegar has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. Among the ailments it’s said to cure are allergies, acne, high cholesterol, joint pain, weight loss, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, dandruff, chronic fatique, candida, sore throat, gum infection, sinus infection, flu, acid reflux, leg cramps and ear infections. It’s also used to help dissolve kidney stones, lower high blood pressure, and it’s also been shown to help with type 2 diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity.

Alcohol-Free Alkaline Cider

Ingredients

  • 20ml of kombucha cordial or 100ml of fresh apple, cranberry, blackberry or grape juice
  • 20ml of apple cider vinegar
  • 450ml chilled sparkling mineral water
  • ice cubes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add the kombucha/juice into a pint glass with the apple cider vinegar. Top up with sparkling water and add ice cubes for extra crispness.
  2. Drink and enjoy!
