15 Incredibly Useful Kitchen Tools Every Health-Conscious Person Should Have

Let’s get straight in. How many of these do you have? If you’re raw a vegan, I bet you’ve got most, if not all of these kitchen tools.

1. A Blender or Smoothie Maker

A blender is really the raw foodie, vegan or alkaline dieter’s go-to essential piece of kitchen equipment. I know several people who actually take their blender on holiday with them and I must admit, I have been tempted a few times.

I have put this at the top of the list because fresh fruit smoothies and green smoothies (with the addition of highly-alkaline green veg, such as kale, spinach, lettuce, celery, cucumber etc) are such great ways to get in a lot of nutrients in an easy, delicious and transportable format.

I have a smoothie maker, which was really cheap and has lasted me for years. It’s the Kenwood Smoothie2Go and it was around £25 ($38). It came out before the Nutribullet and the JML blender and is much cheaper and almost as effective I think.

You put all of your ingredients into the plastic travel mug that it comes with, screw on the blade, switch the machine on for a minute or so and voila! You have a smoothie ready to go, already IN the mug (so no messy pouring from the jug, wasting a lot of  the smoothie and tedious washing up). It comes with seal-tight lids, so you can take your smoothie with you.

If you want lots of different size cups and blades – to be able to blend nuts into pieces and maybe a slightly more powerful blend, then go for the Nutribullet.

If you want to be able to blend larger volumes of ingredients – to make enough smoothie for 2 or 3 people or a large one for yourself, go for a jug blender or smoothie maker.

 2. A Juicer

Juicers are particularly great for hard-core green veg, such as cabbage and Brussels sprouts which, let’s be honest, no one wants to smoothie, no matter how much fruit you add. Also, veg like carrots and beetroots can’t really be blended but make really delicious juices (I currently have a 5kg bag of organic beetroots at home waiting for me to juice, yum!)

There are 2 main types of juicer – a centrifugal (which spins the fruit and veg at high speed to extract the juice) or a masticating, which crushes the fruit and veg. There are pros and cons to each and I have both but if I had to choose one it would be a masticating juicer. I have an Omega juicer and highly recommend it.

A masticating juicer does not take as much volume of food in at once, so it takes longer to use. This can be a pain if you are making a 5 apple, 5 beetroot and 5 carrot juice, for example.

However, only a masticating juicer can juice fresh wheatgrass and since wheatgrass juice is the most amazing superfood, I like to have that option. Also, the quality of the juice is better because there’s less oxidation caused in the crushing process.

Of course, if your budget can accommodate it, get both juicers but if not and you’d like to juice wheatgrass at some point, go with the masticating, like an Omega juicer.

3. A Vegetable Spiralizer

‘What the heck is a spiralizer ?’ you may be asking.

A spiralizer makes noodley spaghetti things out of raw vegetables. You can create courgette/zucchini noodles and sweet potato noodles, which can replace pasta in a spaghetti marinara, making it super-healthy, lower calorie and 100% raw, if you like.

I have a Lurch Spiralizer, which is robust and easy to use and it costs around £25 ($38).

4. Seal Tight Tubs

I’m always making some kind of concoction that I want to store in the fridge or carry with me and that requires a collection of different sized plastic containers. It’s the nature of being a health-conscious person since the foods we tend to eat are home-made and perishable.

In any given day I might make a green smoothie, some beetroot avocado sweet chili dip to have with fresh cut vegetable crudités or oat cakes and some chia coconut pudding

5. An Alkaline Water Filter

Alkaline water is a whole other topic in itself, so do see my more in-depth alkaline water articles as well as this one. There are a range of choices for creating clean, alkaline water in your home – free from harmful chemicals, heavy metals, fluoride, chlorine, hormones and pesticides so often in our tap water supplies.

The crème-de-la-crème, is a water ionizer, followed by a reverse osmosis system. However, maybe you’re not quite ready for the hefty investment of either of these right now and want a good interim option…

How about a simple and moderately effective alkaline water jug or bottle? DYLN living alkaline water bottle is a great and affordable option.

6. A Vitamix or High Speed Blender

We have already included a blender or smoothie maker at number 1 of this list, but I felt that really, any self-respecting longer-term health enthusiast has to also have a high-speed blender, like a Vitamix or Blendtec. Since these are the price of a small car, anywhere from £300-£600 ($450-$900), and has the horsepower to boot, most people buy a cheap blender first and then invest in a high speed one a little later down the line.

The question is, is it really worth the money?

The short answer is, yes.

A high speed blender will make your smoothies silky smooth, with no lumps or bumps whatsoever, even if you’ve added nuts, ice, dates or anything else that normally leaves a bit of texture in your blended food.

You can make raw soups, nut butters, ice cream as well; so they are very versatile.

If you’re a raw foodist, this’ll be your non-negotiable essential kitchen tool.

7. A Grains and Staples Cupboard/Pantry

I always have a good stock of staple grains in a dedicated cupboard and suggest you do too, especially if you have a family to cook for. I find that one of the easiest ways to stay eating healthy and alkaline foods is to have a large variety of these to choose from at any given time.

If you don’t have a good stash of grains and other staples, that’s when you’re likely to grab something on the go or slip into eating Standard Western Diet foods, such as meat, dairy and processed foods.

Here’s the type of things I stock in my staples cupboard:

Buckwheat, brown rice, quinoa, bulgur wheat, millet, cous cous, spelt spaghetti, potatoes and sweet potatoes, home-made chutneys and pickles, veg stock cubes, goji berries, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices, and wheatgrass powder – all of which I can throw together to make a quick, healthy and tasty hearty meal.

8. Pretty Bowls

It’s just makes it a more pleasurable eating experience to eat your breakfasts, soups and cooked grains and root veg from a nice-looking bowl ;-)

9. A Food Processor

You can pick up a great food processor for around £50 ($75) and it allows you to really save time in the kitchen – e.g. for shredding cabbage for coleslaw or thin-slicing apples for stewed fruit.

They’re also great for adding versatility to your meals. I use my food processor to make cauliflower or parsnip rice – blending them until they have a rough, rice-like consistency and then you can either using them either raw or lightly cooked, in place of rice in curries or risottos.

10. A Mandolin

No, not an instrument – a fruit and vegetable slicer. This makes it easy and fast to thin-slice smaller quantities of fruits and veg when you can’t be be bothered with the faff of using your food processor. Just watch your fingers.

11. Electric Scales

Electric scales give you much more accurate measurements than old-style kitchen scales. Plus, I recommend that you weigh out your grains and legumes and root veg when you cook them, so that you can measure your calories. I know calorie counting is not a popular piece of advice these days with all the diets that claim ‘no need to count calories’, but the danger is that if you’re eating healthy, low-fat high-fibre meals, you may be liable to under-eat and not get enough.

Remember, on a low-fat, high fibre diet, the calories per meal are much less and you may need bigger portions.

On some days I like to cook 100g of grains for my Hearty Cooked Fibre Meal (HCFM – one of your 5 daily meals on The Alkaline 5 Diet) and on other days, maybe when I’m doing a long run, I like to eat 150g , so it’s just easier to measure this, rather than guess the quantities.

12. Glass Jars

Keep a store of a few empty glass jars which can be used for drinking smoothies, juices and water out of (so you get none of the BPA nasties that can leach from plastic containers). Also, they’re great for storing home made pickles, chutneys, salad dressings, sauces and soups.

13. A Stainless Steel Straw

If you’re making a lot of smoothies and vegan banana ice creams and you are partial to using a straw then a stainless steel one is great – durable, reusable and stylish. You can get a set of 4 straws and a brush cleaner for around £6 ($9).

14. Selection of Stainless Steel Pans

Continuing the stainless steel theme…I recommend that you use heavy steel pans over non-stick ones – despite the allure of the non-stick variety’s promise. Non-stick and other teflon-coated pans have been linked with cancer, so best to avoid them. Also, heavy steel pans, allow your food to heat and cook more evenly all over.

15. A Dehydrator

I must admit, I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the dehydrator. I recently sold mine because I just didn’t have enough room for it in my kitchen – it’s a large beast! If you can accommodate one however, it is a great tool and I recommend the Excalibur dehydrator. You can make raw flaxseed crackers, dried fruit, kale chips and many more raw foodie and raw vegan delights.

    Hi Laura,
    Great website and great post. I have 8 of these items. I want to get a spiralizer, heard good things about them. Not too fussed about a dehydrator – I use my oven to do kale chips and they turn our pretty good.

    I want to get a Vitamix! I have a smoothie maker but I know Vitamixes are so much better. I want to make vegan ice cream and sorbets.
